ENJOY THE DAY

Yesterday was ridiculously windy. I mean, look what it did to that palm tree's hair! Pretty nonetheless, in my opinion.

I'm soaking up the sunshine and the cool air in the office today while I finish up the floral painting. Even though I'm painting it in a "quick style," I find myself tiptoeing around it, afraid to add on each new layer. So far so good, though. Hopefully we can keep up this trend!

Have a beautiful day. :)

LES FLEURS

Hi + good morning! Or afternoon / evening...depending on where you are. :) I always forget that I'm in my little world where it's warm and early morning, and I need to notice the rest of the world!

Guess what? Let me tell you, because I know you're just dying the know...

I'm working on a new style of painting for an upcoming fundraiser, with a not-so-usual choice of subject. Envision quickly-painted florals, with watercolor and thick acrylic on top. Something like a combination of these styles. This is what I was brainstorming:

Kind of this above style for the base with pops of color in thick acrylic added into the mix. Sort of a tropical / soft feel. We will see! My paintings usually have minds of their own, especially when I'm trying out new things.

I'm also inspired by the images on my new Floral board on Pinterest, so maybe the painting will morph into something like that? Too soon to tell!

Have the best day! I'll happily be covered in paint.

PUMPED UP KICKS

Happy Monday to you!

Well, the weekend turned out to be a combination of almost there accomplishments (i.e. our floating shelf was JUST about to go up on the wall, and we had a slight measurement issue..le sigh...it WILL work!) and total accomplishments (i.e. I finally bought a new pair of work out shoes...since like Freshman year of college).

After doing a bunch of online shopping "research," I thought I had picked out my future pair...the silver ones with pink and neon yellow below, but I accidentally ended up at some amazing shoe outlet yesterday and found these lovelies. In person, they're actually like a neon-ish reddish-orange. Talk about a pop of color on my feet...

I used to just work out in baggy ugly stuff, but you know what? It actually makes me feel better to not put on a trash bag early in the mornings. I'll just try and convince myself that I work out harder when I don't look 100% dumpy.

It's funny that I like to dress in neutrals most of the time, but when it comes to workout code, I'm all over color.

What's your style when it comes to sporty things?

LOUIS V.

Well, hi there! Happy Friday, guys!!! Any plans for the weekend? Seems like I've been anxiously counting down the days to the weekend. Not really sure why...we don't have anything crazy planned, but I've just been aching for Friday to hurry up already. :)

Figured it's high time to share a new illustration + story with ya, too. I was going to finish a painting and write a story for it, but I just got my first magazine subscription ever (yeah, sad), and such a gorgeous shot was on the back. You can check the inspiration photo on my Twitter. PRETTY, huh?

Louis. Her name had given her grief growing up with all the teasing. King Louis the eighth!! Mario and loo-eee-gee!! Lou-lou frou-frou! Louis Vuitton!...well, that one she didn't mind so much. In fact, as a penniless graduate fresh out of college, she found herself standing in front of the huge building stuffed to the brim with fashion in the heart of the city, lost in her thoughts.

One day, she told herself, I'll become it. She clutched the black leather bag close to her chest, trying to catch her breath at the thought of entering the building for the inevitable interview. This was the big one...the one that she knew would serve as first the stepping stone of her dream. One day, her name would be on the fronts of the buildings, the billboards, and the magazines.

Louis pressed her lips together, pushing out the nervous air that was stuck in her chest. She adjusted the bag, shook her short curly hair, and opened the doors to launch into her new world.

DATE NIGHT

If you have a beau (who uses that word any more?), friend, family member, or whoever, what's your favorite date with him / her?

I was dropping in on MadeByGirl today, and she mentioned "how about we... , a site specifically targeted to finding date places. Cool, huh? So then I started thinking about how my guy and I sometimes (well, uh, lots of times) end up driving aimlessly in hopes of finding a new date place that's incredible. Then we end up at McDonald's or something. Kidding. Kind of. I'm a huge sucker for those new vanilla lattes, so I'm ridiculously happy to have one at any point in time.

I went to go look at the site, and it seems super fun, but I'm just kind of hesitant to fork money over so that I know of places to go on dates in San Antonio. SO, of course I couldn't stop thinking about all the places I'm missing out on, and I started researching date spots in this city of mine.

Turns out there are a lot of places that I've missed, and now I have a little list new of places to go, thanks to reviews from people who live here.

The sweetest dates that pulled my heart in every direction, though, were from couples who have been married more than twice the number of years I've been alive. One lady in her 80's said that she still refers to her husband as "boyfriend," and she'll make a fancy dinner, put the candles on and dress up. Then she'll surprise her "boyfriend" with the date at home, and he'll play along and dress up as well.

I've gotta say, I think this is one of my favorite types of dates too (except we're usually in our pajamas). Well...I also love getting all fancy and going to a place with candlelight, white tablecloths (so my husband and I can accidentally spill wine / food crumbs on them), and low light. AND I love outdoorsy dates like biking, hiking (LOVE), or anything. Guess I just can't make up my mind.

All I can say is, I agree with so many of the sweet people that recommended dates: the date itself doesn't matter...it's the person you're spending time with. Look at me, getting all sentimental on you.

What are YOUR favorite dates? Oh! And what have been some of your favorite ones to remember??

I'll go first...since I can't narrow down, I'll do my top three.

1. Our first dinner on our honeymoon in Hawaii - it was pretty fancy pants, and we didn't even have to go any further than outside the hotel lobby. Best banana dessert on the face of this earth.

2. Our first hike in Hawaii - We got caught in the pouring rain, met two hippies on a picnic (they were amazing, by the way), jumped rocks in the rivers, and marveled at the gorgeous landscape.

3. This past Christmas morning, when we promised ourselves that we would go on a run and wake up early before leaving on the road trip to see family. We woke up late (surprise, surprise), ended up at McDonald's with the dog in the car, and we munched on a chicken sandwich with fries while sipping a vanilla latte in the sunny parking lot.

Alright. Your turn. :)

R KABIR

Happy Friday!! Boy, was I ready for this day. We have the weekend completely open, and I'll inevitably fill it with trips to the dog park, an attempt to making a floating shelf, cooking experimentation, and splatters of paint. What are your plans for the weekend?

This illustration + story is dear to this heart of mine, and I was so excited to work with a talented guy named Russell Kabir for merchandising of his music. If you already follow me on Twitter, you got to see a little sneak peek of the progress of this illustration. Without a doubt, R Kabir has easily joined the list of one of the most fascinating people I know.

Enjoy!

The first time I met him was during the set up of our dear friends’ wedding comprised of the groom, my husband’s American best friend from childhood alongside his Chinese bride-to-be who grew up in Hong Kong, now a dear friend of mine. You can imagine how excited I was for this wedding, being that my own family is a multicultural fuse of America mixed with a dash of the Philippines.

The bride, quite fashionable and talkative, had an amazing amount of friends, as one might imagine. A large number of her bridesmaids flew all the way from across the ocean to be part of this cherished event. This is the point where Russell Kabir comes into the scene.

How would a bilingual boy from Oklahoma, versed in the American and Japanese culture and language fit into this story? Well, sometimes things fall into a complicated heap of explanations, but to put it quite short, he was a good friend of one of the bride’s similarly fashionable bridesmaids, also from the city of Hong Kong.

Let’s get back to the point. Seeing that the females bunched together like a tight bouquet pink roses, we decided it might be best if Russell joined the much less feminine crew of boys at the tiny brick townhouse situated in the small cluster of homes on Teakwood Street.

“Do you need a ride?” I asked Russell, whipping around in his direction. He acknowledged, enthusiastic and without any ounce of awkwardness, despite knowing no one other than the beautiful bridesmaid in the crowd.

The few minutes it took to drive the sun-drenched roads from the church setup to our tiny home, I excitedly realized that Russell is one of those gems…the type of person that is naturally at ease, humorous, and intelligent. He tells stories in the most hilarious recollections possible, refers to me as “madame, m’dear, and the greatest among greats,” soaks up his surroundings, and relishes in the countless opportunities life has to offer.

“You’ll be like, BEST friends,” I squawked, referring to the everlasting friendship I could picture between my husband and R Kabir unfolding in my wandering mind.

Who would know that almost two years later, Russell would indeed stay in touch, despite the fact that he moved across the world to Japan to teach, sing, and persevere while we nestled in the Texas heat to learn and grow as well.

I’m excited to see what becomes of Russell in the unpredictable future. Will he leave his mark in this busy world? Ah, you see, but he already has.

ABSTRACT 01

It's so interesting to see how others find their creativity and the way they go about their process of understanding it. I recently came across a video of a photographer describing how she only takes photos in her home and captures shadows, light, and patterns. Of course I forgot to bookmark it and couldn't find it again for the life of me, but I wanted to take a try at taking photos in a different way that I'm used to. Let's call them abstracts, shall we? Creative, I know.

I always realize that the more I just keep practicing at something, the only direction is upward in most cases. Let's hope that goes for my exploration in photography that I'm unfamiliar with.

Oh, and speaking of creative people, have you guys seen this video of Jerry Seinfeld explaining how he writes jokes? I was fascinated and kept laughing throughout the whole thing. Most of that was probably because of the music playing in the background. Plus, I must be nostalgic because my sister and I used to run into my parents' room when we were little just to cram in between the two of them, all of us watching Seinfeld together. Anybody else do that when they were little?

Have a great Wednesday!

SISTER

Well. It's about time that I post another short story + illustration, even though it isn't quite yetFriday! I guess this one could be considered one of my "vintage" illustrations since I made it years before I even fathomed starting Pasadya. It's especially important to me because it's based on my older sister, who, by the way, is celebrating a birthday today. Happiest of birthdays, sister!

The illustration hangs quietly in the guest room, with the sunlightt lightly brushing on the glass protecting it. I see it almost every day. Every time I have to go into the guest closet to reach for the toolbox for one of my projects, or to vacuum and mop the tile floors, often pausing for a few seconds to look at her beauty and remember.

I remember when we used to run around together playing make believe games and throw soft sock balls to one another in unoccupied lots beside our newly-built house comprised of gray brick and white painted panels in the summers. We traveled the country together, and even overseas (with our parents’ guidance, of course). You didn’t think we did it alone, did you? Much more prone to easily smile than I, she would dive into new experiences and rush to meet new people while I took a more skeptical approach. She is one of the few people who made me so disgruntled as a child at one moment, but the next instance, we were rolling on the floor out of laughter together. I think of the time she told me she remembers parts of movies according to the music. My visual artist mind can’t wrap the idea tightly enough to understand how, but her musical mind takes the concept in stride.

Now, she carries herself with confidence and beauty. It almost seems as if she glides. That's quite an oddity to describe her motion, but somehow I can’t think of any other way. We are quite opposite, but so much the same. She’s all about efficiency. I delve too much into thought and thoroughness.  Yet somehow, doesn’t that make for a good combination? Somebody there to strike on an idea, and another to smooth out the bumps along the way? That’s just how we are, she and I.

Today is her birthday. She is a January baby, unlike my warm September origin. Strangely enough, the weather today is uncharacteristically warm, and the leaves are only beginning to turn shades of red and float off of their limbs. As I stare out the window into the sunshine and rustling trees, I rewind back to the memories shared with my sister of play, travel, happiness, hilarity, wonder, and beauty. I’ll see her soon enough. Yesterday when she called, she said she would be here in the middle of February. I got excited, as I always do when she tells me that. Until then, I’ll remember her and be grateful.

***
Thought I'd add a little photo of us on one of our adventures. This is us (she's on the left, and I'm on the right, with our mama). Kinda looks like she's snapping while dancing, doesn't it? I'm skeptical, as I usually was.

Have a great day, guys!

FEATHER FLUFFS DIY

Hey, hey! Like I said yesterday, I'm a bit late posting the tutorial for these little puffs of happiness as far as the holidays go, but I think they would look so adorable for party decor, kids' rooms, or just for whatever you'd like, really.

I found the inspiration for this DIY from these ornaments sold at West Elm, and I couldn't help but hunt for a way to make my own (less tamed) version. If you wanted your little feather puffs to look more like the version from West Elm, you can just make sure to trim all the edges of your feathers straight and make sure they fan down and out. But, I didn't mind the quick and easy look. They're pretty fun!

Here you are:

HEY 2013!

Wow. It's been a while...more than a while, hasn't it? How were your holidays? Good, I hope, and packed full of family, friends, and love.

Here's a little bit of what I experienced over the insanely long break that felt like it snapped by me in 2.6 seconds total. Right when the holidays were starting, I was trying to knit scarves like a crazy person (like five...which is a lot for this beginner knitter) as gifts, and then I thought I was finished with Christmas shopping way before time, but I was so completely wrong. Don't go shopping the day before...just saying!!

I loved getting to open gifts with my guy Christmas morning before we took off back home to see family, and our living room looked like a mini tornado swirled through afterwards. I was so proud of my wrapping skills, especially since I was totally terrible about a year and a half ago and used to dump items into bags without a bow...uh, and sometimes without tissue paper if I couldn't find it. It's amazing how far a little glue, ribbon, and pine cones will get you!

I managed to halfway decorate the tree, and maybe by next year I'll get the entire thing finished! Ah, well. I was meaning to show you a tutorial for those feathery balls of puff on the tree, and I even took photos for it, but I just didn't get around to making the post. I can't wait to go ahead and show you even though the new year is already here, just because I think those little white puffs would be so adorable for room decor, children's rooms, parties...you name it!

New Year's Eve was spent with amazing friends, and I can't even begin to explain how hysterical our little celebration was. We pretty much missed watching the countdown to the new year three times total (we tried to watch the ball drop in New York and forgot about the Texas time difference, we accidentally tuned in on the celebration in Mexico and missed the countdown, and then we missed the countdown in Los Angeles). Seriously. Campaign was being popped too early with everyone screaming, "Noooo!!", people were tripped over one another, confusion was exchanged everywhere, and the dog was howling. My kind of start!! :)

I didn't forget to stuff myself with chocolate, hog the warmth of the fire, enjoy dinner dates at home, explore San Antonio a little more, enjoy the scenery of the places we travelled to, and appreciate time spent with friends and family. And guess what? I even had the bright idea of making myself a mini spa night at home! Whhhyy did I not think of that before?

Needless to say, 2013 had an amazing start, and as one of my sweet readers said, I think this is going to be THE year.

Agreed?
